For all to read; SGM MATEO (ACE) BELLO who served with the 5th SFG in I Corp in NAM at Bato and Thoung Duc and other tours in NAM has been taken from us on 8/2805. He is in God's Garden for Special Forces Green Berets and I know someday I will be joining him and his loving friends.knowing he will be waiting on the LZ preparing everything for us when we arrive for our new operation assignments, just as he did when we landed at his camps to meet his new assignments for his A-Teams for us. Hey, Dad!
Clicked on your link on the videographer's comments blog from the wedding and just thought that I would submit a comment to you for all of your "Old Farts" to see if they should so desire.
I have told you so many times how very proud I am of you for all that you have done for our great nation, but, more importantly, for who you are as my Dad.
I know that you feel that it was an honor to walk me down the isle, but it was just as special for me to walk down the isle with you in your dress blues. It was a perfectly fitting moment that you received a standing ovation at our wedding for your dedication to this country.
When I am old and gray and calling my grandchildren by my children's names, I will never forget that moment. It will be with me always. Thank you for your stories and for teaching me the difference between right and wrong and for allowing me to make my own decisions.
Could I have chosen who was to be my Dad, I would have chosen you a hundred times over.
Thank you and I love you,
Your Pooh

My cousin was engaged to be married to CWO Edward Roger Piper when he and 6 others were KIA in a midair collison close to Bien Hoa on May 28, 1965. I was almost 10 years old at the time; I am now 52. I have become very interested in Edward and what happened to him. I am interested in getting pictures of him and knowing anything else about him that anyone may know or have. My husband was in Vietnam himself 1968-69. All you vets I have come to love, even though I do not know so many of you. Thank you for waht you did for us. I will be forever grateful.

Regarding the missing unit of assignment of MSG Kenneth Ray Chadwick at the time of his death. He was assigned to MACV Advisory Team 77 at the Trung Hoa Ranger Training Center as a company-level advisor to Vietnamese Ranger battalions rotating through the center. He was severely wounded in a mortar attack on the center on 15 March 1967, was evacuated to the 25th Infantry Division base camp in Cu Chi for treatment, but died of his wounds on 16 March. I also notice he is not listed as an ARVN Ranger Advisor KIA on the 75th Ranger Regiment's web site.
MSG Chadwick was one true professional soldier: supremely but quietly competent, highly respected and liked by all who got to know him. And it was my distinct honor to have been his company advisor teammate for the month and a half he was with the team before his death.

Re SFC Harry Boyle, killed at Dak Pek in July 1968. Following comment is from my twin brother: I am John T. Williams, radio operator at Dak Pek, A-242 Jan'68 to May'68. I then transferred to A-244 Ben Het, and was radio operator there from May'68 to end of July'68. I then transferred back to Dak Pek, A-242, and was radio operator from Aug '68 until DEROS, late October '68.
SFC Harry Boyle (Boyles?), came to A-242 Dak Pek in May, 1968 to take my place as radio specialist when I was transferred to Ben Het. He came from the 8th group in Panama, had a Columbian wife, spoke perfect Spanish, and had been on a lot of missions in South America. He told me he was on the mission in Bolivia when Che Guevara was killed. I think he told me that he was actually present when Guevara was killed, and was accidentally photographed on that mission…published somewhere. SFC Boyle (s?) was KIA during practice ranging of a 60mm mortar. A shell with Chinese markings left the barrel and immediately exploded killing Boyles and wounding 2 others. Use of 60mm mortars was curtailed throughout the country for some weeks until the investigation and double checking of all the ammunition was completed.

Mr. Manning,
Your web site is indeed incredible and thought provoking. I was a medic WAC stationed in Ft Sam & Ft Jackson from 65-66. While training at FT Sam, (medic) I made some wonderful SF friends. I was only 18, very petite, and the first time ever away from home. I had a great collection of big brothers, protectors and somewhat good advisers. Before I left to go to Germany, at the end of 66 I had collected some contacts from my friends. I had this information for many years, however like so many things that disappear in moves, my information got lost also. At times I search the internet to find names of friends past.
After I was discharged in 68, I did contact Karl Tiesberg; I met him in Ft Jackson, before I left for Germany in the later part of 66. We spoke a few times by phone, unfortunately, he became distant and it appeared he may have been having a difficult time adjusting to civilian life. I was still quite young 21, and really didn't understand how difficult it must have been for those who came back. Adjusting to civilian life was even difficult for me, and all I did was spend almost 2 years in Heildberg Germany.
I am trying to contact or find out information on Sgt. Richard Crawford, pvt. David Lewis, Ken Hansen, Sgt David Mann, and Bill Gallagher.
Thank you so much for the information you have on your site.

Richard, the www.macvsog.org and www.macvsog.com sites both were run by Robert NOE through another owner. He finally gave up trying to get them to update the site and opened his own at www.macvsog.cc. It is updated regularly ans now has the most up-to-date info on MACVSOG casualties, stories, photos, etc.

I am writing in regard to James K. Sutton, SFC, who was KIA, DOW, on 02/25/1969. In the January 2008 edition of the VFW Magazine I note the article about an attack on two Marine FSB's, FSB Russell and FSB Neville just south of the DMZ and about 10 miles from Laos. At the end of the article it is stated that 38 marines and 1 army special forces soldier were killed in the attack on 02/25/1969. This would appear to me to indicate that SFC Sutton was killed at one or the other of these FSB's as he is the only casualty I noted on this date on your listing. I also note on the virtual wall that SFC Sutton was with C Co., 5th SFGA. I hope this may be of some value to you.

I saw a memorial platt to three SF men who gave their lives defending a small compound at the end of the air strip in Loc Nihn. This platt was over grown in weeds and I stumbled on it. The date was 1963. I observed the platt in Oct 67. I would like to learn more about the three men and the details of their death. Could these men have been Jack Goodman, Lawerence Huckley, and Robert Mosier? I can't recall the names on the platt but noticed their death announcement as being KIA in Loc Ninh in 1963. I wonder if their folks knew about the memorial stone errected to them and what became of the stone platt.

I need someone of you to talk to, I lost two friends in Nam and after all this time the pain get worse instead of better. One I actually should have had a serious relationship with his name was Eric Fassit. He was in the Army here is his info. ERIC RICHARD FASSITT
CPL - E4 - Army - Regular
196th Light Infantry Brigade
Length of service 1 years
His tour began on Jul 18, 1967
Casualty was on Jan 6, 1968
In QUANG TIN, SOUTH VIETNAM
HOSTILE, GROUND CASUALTY
MULTIPLE FRAGMENTATION WOUNDS
Body was recovered
Panel 33E - Line 56 How to you get over this. I really discovered what an idiot I was for not telling him how I felt. He was one of the nicest men you could ever meet.
I need to talk to someone that understand the people who got left behind because of this war. How do you all handle it. I imagine that people think because we were not over there that we do not feel it, but oh God we do. The loss of my friends took hold of my whole life. Especially Eric. The children that I have should have been his. And I know that you guys serve with hero attitudes and in fact all of you are in my minds heros forever. How do you let it go, can you?

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced Tuesday the remains of two US servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors. They are Capt. Warren R. Orr Jr., U.S. Army, of Kewanee, IL; and Airman 1st Class George W. Long, US Air Force, of Medicine, KS.
Long was buried September 30 in Medicine, and Orr's burial is being set by his family.
On May 12, 1968, these men were part of a crew on a C-130 Hercules evacuating Vietnamese citizens from the Kham Duc Special Forces Camp near Da Nang, South Vietnam. While taking off, the crew reported taking heavy enemy ground fire. A forward air controller flying in the area reported seeing the plane explode in midair soon after leaving the runway.
In 1985 and 1991, US officials received remains and identification tags from sources claiming they belonged to men in this crew. Scientific analysis revealed they were not American remains, but it was believed the Vietnamese sources knew where the crash site was located.
In 1993, a joint/US-Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV) team, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), traveled to Kham Duc and interviewed four local citizens concerning the incident. They led the team to the crash site, and turned over remains and identification tags they had recovered in 1983 while looking for scrap metal.
During this visit, the team recovered human remains and aircraft wreckage at the site.
In 1994, another joint team excavated the crash site and recovered remains, pieces of life-support equipment, crew-related gear and personal effects. Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA and dental comparisons in the identification of the remains.

RFI: I am working on officially dedicating our parade field through the USASOC Memorial Program. We are moving to a new compound (after 21 years at Fort Campbell) and 5th SFG(A) desires to protect the memorials to our fallen comrades after we depart the post real estate of our old compound.
Grabriel Field, named in honor of the memory of SP5 James P. Gabriel, 1st SFG (A), is not yet officially dedicated in the program. We are seeking information on James Gabriel from veterans who served with him or know anything about him that exceeds the very limited information we've acquired from the JFK Museum. I have the understanding that we never officially dedicated Gariel Field through the proper channels years ago. Therefore, our memorials are not sufficiently protected from encroachment by the Post Engineers.
The old Gabriel Training Area at Fort Bragg is now classified as "defunct" by the museum. We would like to dedicate our memorial field in Gabriel's name before the destruction teams arrive. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated by the unit and the families and friends of over thirty fallen SOF soldiers, sailors, and airmen.

My condolences to those who gave all, even more so to the families that have no means to close the wound in thier hearts.
Those that serve the US, no matter the branch or job, are in our hearts, minds and prayers.
Those that are MIA/BNR may not be buried in American soil, but thet ARE burned in the hearts, minds,
souls and the stories that ALL Service members try to life up to.
They are held not only in our prayers, but in Gods hands and and heart.
For those that have never had a chance to attend or did not know, ALL brances have a dinner for those that are MIA/BNR.
A formal table is set, complete with rose and flag, The colors are posted and a proyer said. A chance for those who know someone MIA/BNR or those whose status (regardless if in combat or training) is unknown. We do rolll call for units or those who are missing, it is painfully silent as happens. Tapps is played (live bugler, no taped version, soldiers will not stand for it). When dinner is done, we have all remembered those who are not among us, we make new friends, and every year soldiers that served in SWA/Vietnam (and those places we never were/are) always finds that someone they thought alive dead, but happily more often they find one they thought dead still alive.
Every unit honors thier dead with honor, but for those whose status is unknow, those who are listed as MIA (every service members nightmare)those who die doing work for thier country, but because of the PC attitude in the world and spineless government (and yes I intenteded to make that first letter small, even that is more than they deserve) that send us to these places than lie, thier true bravery, sacrifice for God, country, brothers in arm, will NEVER be known.
We may never truely know how many Service Members could be brought home (those alive or dead) if the political system would stand by the Service Members as adamitly as the Service Members stand my them?
I have served in alsmost every "declared combat zone" since 87 and a few that were never declared.
Whoever heard of earning awards that you can't wear, wounds that never happened and having to sign "Statements of non-Disclosure"?
I support my country, defend its freedom, have killed, bled and said Good-Bye to too many friends, and will ALL WAYS SUPPORT OUR SERVICE MEMBERS. Not so the government that runs this country right now.
I can't wait till one of the OIF/OIE veterens come to office. Hell statistaclly, in 25 years most polaticians will have served in combat. Maybe I, and all those left behind and those that served, serve now and will serve then, can finaly sllep at night and, when the times comes, go see our God knowing the future is sacure.

I was a Cdn Airborne Regt officer on SFOC in 69 with 1LT Gerry Kinsman who was killed (MIA-PFD-BNR)on or about 15 Jan 71 along with Sgt Jim Harwood. I remember him as a bright and somewhat shy New Englander - a good guy with a ready sense of humour. I believe I have a photo that includes him. The story that emanated from our Training A-Tm in Bragg was that he was captured along with Sgt Harwood, and that both were executed the following morning after digging their own graves. I can't speak to the accuracy of that report and since they were listed as MIA and subsequently not recovered it is possibly a mythical account. I've visited him at "The Wall" and remember him often. I believe he was in RVN only a week or so before he died.

In referance to 2LT Vince Sabatinelli who is listed as KIA/DNH, I can tell you this with a great deal of certainty; Vince was a platoon leader, A CO Hatchet Force out of CCN in DaNang. His platoon was on a mission (I dont know where) A CH34 Kingbee Crashed from a fairly low altitude, Vince and others were on the ground at the time. The Kingbee tipped over, the rotor hitting Vince in the Head. There was also an SFC named Sager who was on the mission. Sager sustained some broken/cracked ribs, and remained with CCN for the rest of his tour in a non combat capacity. I arrived at CCN DaNang 3 days after these events. A Company Hatchet was reconstituted, and I wound up being a squad Leader. My first job was to go up to Mai Loc and get all the Yards back that others had sent on leave. I got em all back to DaNang, but than for some reason most of A Company Hatchet wound up deing Muongs and Cambodes

Re: Norman Payne MIA 12/19/68. I was working as medic while we were building new site at Mai Loc under Clyde Sincere. I pulled one of the guys from a team that was launching because of high temp. Norman had driven a truck up and volunteered to go with them but had no web gear. I gave him my setup and he went with them. (Norman had been my #2 at Phu Bai, George Bacon was my #3 RTO) Norman was known as Buffalo and also as Buddha. The team was hit when getting ready for RON. I flew over with chase ship and saw someone throw small smoke markers. The colors came off in the same order that I had taped them on my web gear. I could not get the pilot to go down to check.

As the NVA Sappers were destroyed before they ever reached the inner perimeter, there were no U.S. casualties that evening at Tong Le Chan, but the CIDG Company defending the penetrated outer perimeter sector was lost to a man. The only assistance required from the 1st ID the next morning during the mop-up was artillery and ARA along with helicopter support to bring in reinforcements, and most of that came out of Quan Loi.

These were two unrelated incidents on 07 Aug 67. The first occured at FSB Dutchman near QL13 - Binh Long Prov - where 6 men were KIA from Alpha Co, 1/28th - 1stDiv.
Donald ~ this overview of the SF camp is interesting. I don't see any US KIA's for the 7th or 8th of Aug in Tay Ninh - whether SF or Line. Curiously, do you know which Army unit was pulled into this fracas the next day to help mop things up - or was the work done by SF/Indig's?

I’m sure you mean Tong Le Chan and not Minh Thanh. Tong Le Chan was a Special Forces CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) camp near the Cambodian Border on the eastern edge of Tay Ninh Province and about 20 kilometers north of the Special Forces CIDG camp at Minh Thanh.
A twelve man Special Forces A Detachment, A-334, and four companies of CIDG were defending the camp at Tong Le Chan on the night of August 6, 1967 when a company of NVA Sappers penetrated the wire on the northeastern sector of the camp undetected at about 0200 HRS. The Sappers threw satchel charges into the outer perimeter bunkers and were in the open moving toward the inner perimeter when one of the Sappers threw a satchel charge into the 4.2 inch mortar pit ammunition bunker where over 1,500 rounds of 4.2 mortar ammunition was stored. The resulting blast could be heard in An Loc over twenty kilometers away and blew most of the Sappers all the way to Hell. For the remainder of the night, a number of shell-shocked Sappers hid in the bunkers they had already destroyed and had to be rooted out one by one the next morning.
The real puzzler came the next morning when it was discovered there was over a company of NVA Infantry dug in outside the wire along the sector the Sappers had infiltrated through. This NVA Company had been given the assignment of providing cover for the Sappers when they withdrew. The Sappers never withdrew, and the NVA Company was still there the next morning at sun up still waiting for their withdrawal.
That NVA Infantry Company would not withdraw and they fought to the last man. Each NVA fighting position had to be individually overwhelmed and its defenders killed. A number of different weapons systems were used in this NVA Company’s removal, and gun ships were one. That is probably where you and your gun ship platoon entered the fracas. Oh, by the way…thanks.

I was a crew chief on Big Red One's Rebel Armed helicopter and was wondering if anyone remembered 7 august 1967 at a little place called Men Thanh. It was one of the most fierce 12 hour battles i ever fought in and at one point we were directed to strafe(no rockets) within the interior wire with our mini-guns. I've always wondered about those men. Any help would be appreciated

I was a Dust-Off crewchief 101 Abn northern I Corps 1970-71. in early 1971 no later than April, we were called out to pick up a wounded American advisor. When we arrived the American was KIA still lying on the ground . He wore a Special Forces patch . I remember he was still sharp looking , his uniform had all the patches and he didnt look like he had been in the field long. There were a few things that werent right. The South Vietnameese troops made no effort to put him in the ship. My medic and I got out put him on a streatcher and put him in the ship. The Vietnameese said he had just recently been shot. My medic SP/5 Robert Speer said he had been shot longer than that. He was very light skinned had turned a light blue. The Vietnameese were standing up in the open clearing where the American had been supossedly shot. We thought the situation was very suspicious and figured they (the south vietnameese) had killed him. I cant make out from the SF KIA list of this SF man being KIA in Thua Thien or Quang Tri Province. I always wondered who this SF man was and how he really was KIA.

CSM, on the death of Goodhue and Terry from ST New York in July 67, here is a comment from Robert Noe's macvsog.cc site...hope it helps:
Goodhue and Terry: d. Spike Team NEW YORK landed in the vicinity of target ROMEO-6 (YC472010) at YB461983 on 010400Z Jul 67. Shortly after leaving the LZ the ST observed five enemy personnel wearing black pajamas, straw coolie hats, pistol belts without packs or other web gear, and carrying semi-automatic weapons. The ST observed a 12 foot square bunker with no overhead cover at YB457990. While attempting to emplace two M7A vehicle mines at YB443987 the ST was observed by four enemy personnel wearing black pajamas. One of the enemy was wearing a baseball cap and carrying a pistol, the others were wearing black bush hats and carrying rifles. The ST was extracted from the ROMEO-6 target area at YC436001 on 030955Z Jul 67. While the ST was being flown from the launch site in SVN to the FOB at Kontum, a mid-air collision between the two CH-34s resulted in the death of two USSF and four VN team members and two helicopter crew members in one helicopter, injuries to the remainder of the ST in the other helicopter, and the destruction of both CH-34s......" (Note: The only USSF Personnel that died in South Vietnam on July 3 and 4, 1967 were SFC Marlin J. Goodhue, SFC Thomas L. Terry, and SGT Leo Earl Seymour. Therefore, deduction leaves the only possible SF personnel to have been Goodhue and Terry) SFC Terry's OMPF file shows: HHC5thSFG(ABN) 1stSF MACSOG...LT WPNS LDR...22May 67 (and had previously been with 1/35 - 25thID). Reg Manning has him correctly coded to CCC/FOB2. since they were flying from the launch site to Kontum I suspect the guys would have been with FOB2 or later known as CCC. The report indicates they actually died on 7/3/67......but the Army didn't report them KIA until 7/4 when the 170AHC got there to retrieve the remains. This information was compiled by Bruce Swander Washington, DC USMC/66-70 and Robert L. Noe

HIs medivac unit is doing a history on their people killed in VN. We think he was SF in the late 1960's and completed one tour in VN. Came home, went to flight school and went back as a helicopter pilot and was killed in 1971 trying to airlift some wounded South Vietnamese soldiers from a battle zone. We despirately need a photo of Dean for the memorial publication. ANy help or advice will be greatly appreciated. HIs parents are deceased and his brother did not have a photo of him, so I am hoping that his friends in the SF can help us. A graduation photo from Ft. Rucker would be great. Thanks.

This note is concerning my husband, Cpt. James D. Birchim, MIA on 11/15/68. I have supporting evidence to back-up the statements I'm about to make. My husband was on RT New Hampshire and NOT RT Vermont. Why? Because Jim was being inserted into Laos to help SP4 William Copley's team which was RT Vermont. Jim was listed as MIA till May 10, 1971, when the government decided (without additional proof)to change his status to KIABNR. So, technically, his date of "death" is May 10, 1971. If this isn't confusing enough, in the past 1 1/2 years I've gotten two official documents that puts Jim as a POW! If you want more info, please just send me an email with your phone number and I'd be happy to talk with you.

CSM: Re the death of Jimmie Honley, 20 Nov 66: B-23 put together 6 companies drawn from 3 different A Camps to invade a Heavily jungled area near Nuon Co. Honely made contact with an NVA patrol on a high speed trail. He chased them alone for 3 miles killing them one after the other. He followed them down an extremely steep jungle slope and was shot down as he tried to storm across a log bridge on the rushing stream at the bottom. He died as his men tried to carry him out of that gorge. I have a picture of that bridge taken from above on the jungle slope and from the end of it. Left a copy at the VN memorial on Memorial Day 1985.

Re the August query on Kennety Worthley, here is the entry on his death taken from www.macvsog.cc "memorial - chronological."
26 Aug 69 - Kenneth W. Worthley, SSG E-6, USASF, CCC, Recon Tm Flordia, Team Leader-KIA-RR Worthley, One-Zero, Bob Garcia, One-One, and a new man, Dale Hanson, One-Two, inserted into Northern Cambodia. Inserting uneventful, however, shortly thereafter, two trackers had picked up their trail, Garzia fired killing one and then taking an M-79, he killed
another NVA. Brush started to break around them; apparently, they were being followed by a company size element. The team was now on the run when Hanson left middle finger was shot off. It was now getting dark, the team hid in a narrow gully for the night. At dawn, the team moved into the jungle where the team encountered two NVA who were killed by Worthley. One of the NVA was identified as probable Chinese Colonel intelligence officer. Again, the team was on the run as more NVA arrived and was hot on their trail. The team worked themselves to a bamboo grove, adequate for a STABO rig extraction. Garcia calling in air strikes to hold the enemy at bay. The first Huey arrived and dropped four ropes, Three SCU and Worthley?s body were extracted. Worthely had been shot through the neck and died at the LZ. A second helicopter arrived and extracted the remainder of the team. (Note: The documents captured from the intelligence officer contained the name of double agents in South Vietnam, including the name of the double agent that was executed by 5th SFGA. Col Rheault was the Group commander and had been charged with murder and imprisoned for several months. He was released shortly after the death of Worthley). Frank Greco submitted the quoted portion to be fair to Col Rheault.

Re Dickie Golding, KIA at CCC, November 1968. He was wounded at FOB-4. then in early November transferred to FOB-2 Kontum. Around 22 November, he was in a bar just ourside the wire of FOB-2. Some South Vietnamese rangers were drunk in the bar and started pistol whipping one of golding's mountagnard soldiers. Golding intervened and was shot in the stomach by a SVN ranger with a .45 pistol. The ranger turned the pistol on other americans sitting in the bar wounding several including SFC James McGlon. Golding was a brave man; his death was unexpected an unjustified...we have to leave it to the Great Maker as to why.

I was the chase medic at CCN MLT-2 when Jim was killed. He was on a Team composed of another RT (it was Jimmy Horton’s RT)and RT Asp(Ted Finley team) where he was the 12 and it was his first mission. Their mission was up in the DMZ. We had just put them in when Saigon call and told us to abort the mission based upon the LZ being compromised. However, it was to late and they came under fire immediately as they stepped off the Chopper. Jim Holder was hit immediately and killed along with three other little people. Ted was seriously wounded and the teams were split. It took us all day to get them out. If I remember right Hortons team had several wounded; but nothing serious and Finley team was 1US KIA/3MY KIA and 3MY WIA. Finley recovered from his wounds.

B-34 SF DET was a US Army unit
120 AVN was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Phuoc Long Province, III Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Song Be
Description: As part of MACV's reaction to the deterioting ARVN position, the SF B-34 Det was moved from Kontum to Song Be on 16 April. They joined the MACV team and established a fortified hill area. At 0145H the VC 761st and 763d Regts attacked. Even though the American positions were still being constructed, they were strong enough to save part of the city that night. The 120th Avn Co maintained a POW team at this location and they joined in the defense. At 0345H armed helicopters arrived overhead but the low clouds and smoke prevented them from rendering effective close support. They did silence some VC artillery and RRs to the west of the town. VC heavy machine guns repeatedly drove off the medevac helicopters until the guns were silenced by airstrikes. At 0800 16 WIAs were lifted out. The two VC regts occupied the center of Song Be until noon when the 36th ARVN Rangers finally cleared the area. The 34th ARVN Rangers reinforced and reoccupied the entire town that evening.
Comments: PFC Ward; 120 AVN POW TEAM; WIA
------------------------------------------------------
My Dad is the "PFC Ward" mentioned in the excert above. I am trying to research the battle of May 11, 1965 at Song Be, and I would appreciate any contacts or information anyone can provide. I would especially like to hear from any of the SF personnel, or the other member of the POL team from the 120th AVN CO who, like my Dad, just happened to be there that night, and joined in the heroic defense of the base camp. Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,

CSM Manning,
Chalk one up for the good guy. Guess my 70 plus yrs and bad eye sight is now taking effect after more than 30 years of retirement. Sorry bout that. William Horner was my replacement in MACVSOG at what was called "House 10 or Villa 10" which was located just outside the Airbase in Saigon. His primary job was that of packing the chutes that were used for the indig that were being inserted and also rigging all of the buddles for those teams. In addition to that he was to help with the jump training at Camp Long Thanh. Bill was working with some of the indig with their training at the camp when he was killed. He was firing the 60mm mortor at the time. The mortor round exploded just as it left the tube killing him instantly. I was notified of this since I had spent a year from 64-65 doing the same job. "I can not say that is exactly what happened" but it does appear to be true according to other sourses. I had taken over the job of working with parachute packing, bundle rigging and training of the indig at Camp Long Thanh from CSD. COL Clyde Russell was our first SOG Commander, MAJ Hanz Manz was the logistical officer, MSG Linwood E. Pate was the logistic NCOIC, SSG James McGlon was the Intel and OP Sgt at SOG Headquarters on Pasture street in Saigon. I could give you the names of most of the teams that were inserted during 64-65 and according to other sourses most of them were either killed or captured as soon as the hit the ground. You probably already know most of this anyway. Have a good day. I will get my eyes checked again.

There are thr names missing I think that I know were either killed or executed.. Cpt Wally Moon who was also executed with MSG Roraback A-21 at Heip Hoa and Sp4 William Hunt on the same team. He is still listed as MIA I think. William Horner, who was my replacement in 1965 with MACVSOG at House 10 was killed at Camp Long Thanh on 10 July 1965 by a mortor round explosion. All of this I know to be a fact. Bill Hunt was my next door neighbor and a very good friend. Bill Horner and I served together at Ft Bragg as riggers and also on the HALO Committer at Bragg together. Hope this helps some. Keep up the good work. Maybe someday the full truth will be known to all about Special Forces. Bill Kendall, 20 years in SF (1954-74)

I was reviewing your roster, sorted by date of KIA/MIA, and I found First Lieutentant Daniel Wente's name missing.
I was assigned to Detachment A-351, Hiep Hoa, Hia Nghia Provence, III CTZ in early February, 1967. On 06 Mar 67 was wounded, and shipped immediately to Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg, arriving there on 11 Mar 67.
Lt. Wente was killed on 11 Mar 67, when his gunboat was ambushed on the Vam Co Dong River, between Hiep Hoa and A-352, which was located at Tra Cu. I believe his body was recovered either that day, or a couple of days later, and returned to the United States for burial. I believe his home of record was Illinois.

Reg, first, thanks for all your work on this. Awesome!
I stumbled across your site looking for "Tay Ninh Airstrip". A couple of items really caught my eye: 1 - Capt James E. Casale, 29 MAY 66: I sent following email text to Mr. Taylor who was identified with this entry (I didn't send my email as an argument but as a vivid memory from a, then, 24 year old USAF SSGT): Quote: Mr. Taylor, I have a different, but vivid, remembrance of this event.
I was a recent arrival at Tay Ninh City and Det B-32 5th SF, and replacement for rotating USAF SSgt Lyle D. Matson, O-1 Crew Chief. I was the Crew Chief that launched this flight, on a Sunday, and helped Capt Casale get strapped in the back seat. As I recall, he had been in country for only a couple of weeks and had a family in Okinawa. USAF Capt. Edward A. Woelfel (Cobra 6) was the Forward Air Controller (FAC) pilot.
When I returned to the compound after the launch I stopped by our mess hall for a few minutes. When I finally went to the USAF radio room to await Capt Woelfel's return, I was met with joyous greetings. Bewildered, I learned Capt Woelfel was returning with a wounded passenger and the radio operators had thought it was me in the back seat. Lyle Matson had already departed for the airstrip and when I got there the medics and Lyle had removed Capt Casale for medical care. I was told by Lyle that Capt Casale was unconscious but alive when they landed.
Lyle and I had the unpleasant task of cleaning up our O-1. During the course of this activity I analyzed the trajectory of the round that hit Capt Casale and realized the round was still in the airplane. After passing through the captain it had spent itself on a WP grenade on the back of Capt Woelfel's seat and fallen to the floor. I found it under a radio under the back seat where Capt Casale was sitting. I ended up giving the 7.62 round to the B-32 medic (a Spec E-7, but can't remember his name) who later put it on a necklace he wore.
Capt Woelfel described the flight in detail. Part of it was they heard only one round fired and they were "contour" flying, i.e., flying close to the ground contour. This had been requested by Capt Casale because he needed better visibility of the surface than was provided at the required 1500' minimum AGL altitude for visual recon.
Ed Woelfel visited me in July 2003 and we discussed this incident again. Sadly, Ed passed away in 2004 and was buried at Arlington, 19 MAY 04. I attended his funeral there. End quote.
I sent a followup email advising that Trai Bi was Northwest of Tay Ninh, not Northeast.
Item 2 that caught my eye was SSG William B. Hunt, 4 NOV 1966. I knew him because of his visits to B-32 and have 2-3 pictures of him. He was from at or near Potlatch, Idaho and knew a guy with whom I had gone through Aircraft Tech School in 1960. I think one of the pictures is the group he was with as they were about to load on the chopper to go out to Soui Da and where the Mike Force was surrounded. We kept a FAC in the air continuously for over 48 hours on this effort that became a part of Operation Attleboro. Larry

SSG Lee Eldon Sinclair was one of the SF cadre assigned to my team at MACV RECONDO School. While on RON/NPD - we heard movement and had sightings during the day. As team leader I chose to move the position after dark. Late at night Sinclair thought he heard movement once again, and detonated the WP grenade he was holding. This wa a "combat mission", yet he is listed a Died Non-Hostile. What is non-hostile about combat? Anyway, it was about 23km west of Nha Trang in the mountains sometime around 2am on I believe May 29, 1969.

You have a great sire that I'm sure does a great service to many living relatives and friends of SF personnel. Many years ago (around 1957) in Germany I knew a SFC James Slatton. Jim went to OCS and served several tours in SE Asia with SF. He resigned his commission and later reenlisted with a grade determination as E-5 and then he applied for reinstatement of his commission. I last saw Jim in early 1968 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Fortunately, I have not seen his name on any of the SF lists so I assume he must have eventually retired. Jim was a great guy and if anyone knows where he is today please advise. I also have a good friend (former SF, HALO, and about everything else by name of SGM (Ret) Mark Strick who lives in Springfield, MO. If anyone wants to contact Mark his email is markandrosehalo@sbcglobal.net. We reviewed some of the SF pages together today and Mark knew many of the names.
Thanks for your great site. It is a great site for people with questions of loved ones lost in SE Asia to look at.

Looking for pics of nha-trang. (A-503, MP's or any other units team pictures). Looking for father who was stationed there. I was born on 12 Jun 67 and my sister 31 Oct 68. My mother was working in the local bar owned by her uncle (yen). My sister is looking for closure...as for me my step-father is my DAD. He was the one that didn't leave us behind. We think his name is William O (mixed-hispanic) possibly from Mass.
God Bless you all...De Oppresso Liber!
